Sea Turtles
Sea turtle is a cold blooded migratory species which are spread over a large geographical area. They are listed as vulnerable (Olive Ridley and Leatherback turtles), endangered (Green turtles) and critically endangered (Hawksbill turtles) in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. In the 1960’s and before, the landings of Leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) was a natural scenario in Rantau Abang. Thus, the Rantau Abang used to be well known for the landings of Leatherback turtles. According to the State Director of Terengganu Fisheries Department, Abdul Khalil Abdul Karim said the last time two leatherback turtles nested at the Rantau Abang beach was back in 2008. Generally, there are no landings of Leatherback turtles that have been recorded in 2013 (Terengganu Fisheries Department). The map above shows the location of turtle landing in Terengganu. In the next section, the statistics of turtle landings and hatchlings at Geliga, Kemaman and Chagar Hutang, Redang Island can be found as both of these places have the highest number of turtle landing.
